About our martial art and training philosophy

Hei - Steady / Jo - Always / Shin - Inner Essence

Hei Jo Shin KanjiHeijoshin is the concept of the whole inner being of a person being continually at peace. Heijoshin, true peace of mind, is probably best understood not as a single attribute, but as a combination - or rather the culmination - of several character traits. Each of the aspects that together create heijoshin take years of effort, experience and accomplishment to develop, making heijoshin the product of a lifetime of patient training.

To achieve genuine peace of mind requires focus on three key areas, (1) the intellect, (2) the emotions (3) that indefinable element that we often call “character” or “integrity”. These three areas must be developed in balance. The ultimate objective of heijoshin is the same as the ultimate objective of the martial arts - to help each individual reach his or her full potential, and thereby improve society as a whole.

Nin - Perseverance / Jutsu - Military Style

Nin Ja KanjiNinjutsu is a Japanese martial art that dates back over 2000 years, making it one of Japan’s oldest martial arts. Ninjutsu literally translates as the art of perseverance or "winning." It is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and effective martial arts, utilizing elements of joint locking, throwing, striking, nerve strikes, all manner of formal and improvised weaponry, ukemi (the art of falling and rolling safely) and extreme levels of mental and physical fitness and discipline. The ancient practitioners of Ninjutsu (Ninja or Shinobi) lived outside of formal society and were organized into clans, most of which specialized in one or more specific aspects of the style (example: archery, rope tying, climbing, etc.) Ninjutsu was notoriously effective during Japan’s wartime period, and ninja were commonly employed by the Samurai class in capacities ranging from intelligence gathering to espionage, and even assassination.

Additionally...

...the ninja were masters of role-playing, misdirection and psychology, which they used to great effect in distracting and confusing their opponents. This is what set them apart from the ordinary warrior of the day. So renowned were the ninja’s abilities, many regarded them as possessing magical powers, hence the modern day mythology we have of the ninja "disappearing" in a puff of smoke.

As contemporary practitioners of Ninjutsu, we have adapted and updated the techniques to be appropriately effective for modern society, incorporating a variety of techniques and methods from other martial arts styles, while always maintaining a focus on non-violent conflict resolution.

While ninjutsu will always have at its core the concepts of perseverance, protection, and survival, we have changed the focus of the practitioner from one who provides a "service for hire" to one who provides service to the community, society, and humanity at large - making ourselves and the world the best they can be in the process.
